Jason Blacquiere wasn’t sure that post-secondary education was for him. When he was laid-off from the technology sector in 2011, he decided returning to school was the best way to get a jump on his career.

He enrolled in Seneca’s Computer Systems Technology advanced diploma program. As part of the program, Jason participated in a four-month co-op placement at GMC Software Technology in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

“I was ready to graduate, to get back out there and put my newfound skills to work,” says Jason. “I applied for co-op, an amazing program that connects future graduates with industry employers, allowing them to build a strong resume and gain valuable experience.”

He spent that time working as a technical account manager, dealing with software issues, providing support to clients, issuing product licenses, and resolving internal IT issues. Jason’s can-do and customer-first attitude and his exceptional communication skills set him apart. As his co-op was finishing, he was hired full-time as a Software Support Analyst with the company.

“I couldn’t have found this type of opportunity anywhere else but Seneca,” Jason says. “Getting hired right out of college is unheard of.”

Seneca College offers a wide range of programs with mandatory or optional field-placement, internship or co-op components, giving students the opportunity to integrate academic learning with practical work experience.
