Description:The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) offers a multi- and interdisciplinary graduate program developed from the past programs of History and Philosophy of Education as well as Sociology in Education. This department provides students with critical understandings of the social, historical, cultural, political, economic, and ethical contexts of education, broadly conceived. Based on the diverse intellectual traditions of the humanities and social sciences, the department is committed to multi- and interdisciplinary studies in education, with a focus on equity and social justice from a variety of perspectives including history, philosophy, sociology and political science.

The SJE program is concerned with both theoretical and empirical problems regarding in/equity in educational spaces, broadly conceived. This MEd program will be of interest to persons aspiring to assume responsibilities in a social justice area in schools and school boards; or who wish to undertake labour and community education and research; or who work in community organizations on issues of social change; or who wish to pursue further graduate studies in humanities and social sciences and in professional programs, such as education, law, and social work.
