DescriptionCome explore the practices, history, and theory of sequential art; and learn drawing with an emphasis on fine art skills and norms for cartooning, including life drawing, inking, and penciling at basic and advance levels. In this program, students learn about narrative and scriptwriting with the traditional elements of plot and character development and enhanced understanding of dialogue as the primary vehicle of plot in graphic novels and cartooning. They also use technology in the creative process, focusing on the use of digital colorization using Photoshop as it applies to sequential art. They will acquire skills for character design and storyboarding - the practice of creating character through storyboards to help define and individualize cartoon characters and backgrounds. The program also covers self-publishing and freelancing - how to research, market, and promote the sequential artist online and in the corporate sector.

Career alternatives include court reporting; technical illustration; storyboarding for advertising, film, and television; and children’s illustrator.
