Prerequisites NotesStudents cannot enter the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science directly out of high school. Students first need to complete one year of full-time university study and complete courses in English, introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, statistics, along with biology courses which incorporate genetics and microbiology. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required in preprofessional course work. Applicants will be ranked according to the GPA in the required courses. Students with Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) General Certificate may be eligible for the Post-Professional Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science.

DescriptionThe Division of Medical Laboratory Science in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta offers both a versatile, four-year professional degree program in Medical Laboratory Science (students acquire both general certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science and a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science), and a degree-completion program for technologists with general certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science. The program is designed to provide a broad and well-rounded education to meet the demand in public and private labs for more highly qualified laboratory personnel.

The four-year professional degree program is a fully integrated program consisting of a preprofessional year followed by three years in the Division of Medical Laboratory Science.
