DescriptionThe Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta offers students an exciting and rigorous program leading to a Masters degree in the History of Art, Design and Visual Culture. HADVC emphasizes critical thinking about how the world is mediated by technologies of vision, images and material objects. We offer a range of courses on modern and contemporary art and theory, design, new media, the graphic arts, and museum practices. Ongoing and recently completed thesis topics include contemporary art and the representation of cancer, a comparative study of democratic design in East Germany and the United States; contemporary Chinese art and the conditions of globalization; anatomical wax sculptures; and the politics of collecting.
