Program Description
The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Anthropology (Thesis) offered by the Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes critical thinking and a stimulating academic environment. The program’s objective is to equip students with skills in writing, analysis, and scientific communication to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.
Aside from the general option, the M.A. in Anthropology can also be taken with an option:
Development Studies option: this cross-disciplinary option is offered within existing M.A. programs in the departments of Geography, History, Political Science, Anthropology, Economics, and Sociology.
Environment option: offered in collaboration with the Bieler School of Environment to complement the unit’s expertise, this option considers how various dimensions (scientific, social, legal, ethical) interact to define environmental and sustainability issues.
Gender and Women Studies option: permits students to focus their thesis on gender and women's studies, and/or issues in feminist research and methods.
Unique Program Features
- Students have the opportunity to collaborate with research centers such as Anthropology for the Ecozoic, the Critical Media Lab, STANDD, CICADA and I-CAN;
- There are departmental collaborations with other research centers at McGill such as Social Studies of Medicine, the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies, the Institute for the Study of International Development, the McGill School of the Environment, Art History and Communication Studies, the Institute of Islamic Studies, the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy, and the School of Religious Studies.
