University vs College

While our American neighbours use “college” and “university” interchangeably, the words have very different meanings in Canada. Colleges mostly grant certificates and diplomas, and are focused on hands-on learning and developing job skills. Universities, on the other hand, grant degrees and have an academic or theoretical focus. Colleges and universities may offer similar-sounding programs, but their approach to education is different.

College programs are great for gaining practical experience that can teach you skills you will use on the job. The programs tend to take one or two years to complete and are generally less expensive than university programs. College programs are diverse, ranging from graphic design to plumbing, hotel management to dental hygiene. Universities focus more strongly on academics and research. Programs are 3 or 4 years for a bachelor’s degree and cost an average of $18,000 per year for international students. University programs include traditional subjects like science and business as well as contemporary subjects like new media and e-commerce management.

Some students are choosing to do a combination of both university and college. For example, a student with a bachelor’s degree may attend college to gain more practical skills, or they might enroll in a university program that has a college component.

Whether you choose college, university, or a combination of the two, the decision should be based on what you’re looking to get out of school. Study in Canada can help you find the right school for your needs no matter what type of education you choose!
