British Council IELTS’s expansion in Canada
In 2012, the British Council (BC) expanded its professional test centre network by partnering with eight Canadian English language schools: ILSC (Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal), Canada College (Montreal), ILTTS (Mississauga), Kaplan PLI (Vancouver), ETC (Toronto), ACC (Brandon), administering the test in 20 cities across Canada.
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, and is used to assess the language ability of people who wish to study, work and/or immigrate where English is the language of communication. IELTS is recognized by Canada’s most renowned schools, universities, and companies, and was the first language proficiency test to be accepted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as well as the provincial government of Quebec.
John Gildea who is British Council’s Global Head of IELTS said: “In the past year we have had considerable success in scaling up British Council IELTS’ presence in Canada and we are very keen to see this process continue in the current year and beyond.”
Whilst the number of IELTS tests delivered has significantly risen in the past three years, its popularity in Canada remains fairly small.

We provide free access to Road to IELTS via our website, and all who register with British Council” said Assia Hamdane, Marketing Manager British Council IELTS Canada. “Indeed we are looking at being present and more visible across Canada by participating in important educational events and providing additional information to potential test takers. Nevertheless, we will mostly put emphasis on the quality of the customer service we provide to whoever enquires about IELTS” said Nizamul Hoque, Assistant Regional Manager British Council IELTS Canada.
