Life outside the classroom

While class, studying, and assignments may be your main concern while in school, extracurricular and social activities will help shape your student experience. Here are some ways to get involved when you’re not in the classroom:

Athletics

School athletics get you involved on campus while staying active. Trying out for a school team helps to build school spirit and meet other students. If you don’t want to play for a competitive team, see what your campus offers for recreational sports, classes, or athletic clubs.

Clubs

Joining a club is a great way to meet other students with similar interests. Many schools often have clubs with an international student focus to help introduce new students from other countries to each other. If there isn’t a club you’d like to join, start your own!

Student Government

Want to play a role in planning student events and advocating for student interests? Getting involved in student government might be for you. Student governments are often looking for volunteers to help with their initiatives, and the skills you learn might even end up on your resume.

Work

Want to earn some money while you’re a student? A part-time job can help pay tuition while also developing your job skills and experience. Check in with your school to see about jobs on and off campus. If you are studying on a student visa, look into what work options are open to you while you are in school.

Explore the city

Get to know your new home by checking out local sites like museums, restaurants, shopping, and outdoor attractions. Your local tourism office will be able to provide information in major sites, and you can always ask the locals for suggestions.
