Areas of Expertise
UBC is a broadly based comprehensive university providing a wide range of undergraduate, post-graduate, and professional programs through 17 faculties and 15 schools at two principal campuses. The University's teaching faculty is regularly recognized with national and international awards, such as Dr. Sally Otto. Professor of Zoology and Director, Centre for Biodiversity Research at UBC's Okanagan campus, awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a MacArthur Foundation Grant (the so-called 'Genius Grant'). Faculty members have also earned memberships of the British Royal Society, and the US Academy of Sciences, together with Killam Research Prizes, Medical Research Council of Canada Scientists awards, and gold medals from the Science Council of British Columbia. UBC faculty participate in each of the Canadian government's Networks of Centres of Excellence programs and altogether receive more than $550 million annually in research grants and contracts. UBC's library comprises 22 branches and service divisions, including three that serve five teaching and research hospitals. A number of research centres and organizations are located on-campus, including the TRIUMF facility, home to Canada's National Particle Physics Laboratory, and one of the world's largest national accelerator facilities for research in subatomic physics. UBC also possesses the Museum of Anthropology (Canada's largest teaching museum), the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and many more outstanding facilities for research and learning.
