Canada Calling: Balancing the Benefits and Challenges

Studying abroad is a transformative experience that opens doors to new cultures, perspectives, and academic opportunities. When considering where to study for university, Canada continues to emerge as a compelling choice for students from around the globe. Here’s a breakdown of why to study in Canada, along with some considerations to keep in mind.

Pros

1. Academic excellence

Canada is known for its world-class education system, with its universities consistently ranking amongst the best globally. Almost every institution in Canada offers a diverse range of programs and research opportunities while ensuring a high-quality academic experience.

2. Cultural diversity and safe environment

Canada prides itself on being a multicultural society, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds. International students can expect a welcoming and safe environment that values diversity and offers ways for students to learn from the global community and build lifelong connections.

3. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Upon graduation, Canada offers various pathways for international students to gain valuable work experience through programs like the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This can lead to pathways for permanent residency and long-term career prospects in Canada.

Cons

1. Harsh winter climate

Canada is infamous for its cold winters, which can be challenging for students who are from warmer climates. Being able to adapt to the seasonal changes are essential for comfort and well-being.

2. Competitive admission

Admission to Canadian universities can be highly competitive because of its top quality. Meeting academic requirements and demonstrating proficiency in English and/or French may pose as challenges for some students.

3. Limited opportunities in remote areas

Studying in more remote or rural parts of Canada may limit access to certain amenities, cultural activities, and networking compared to major urban areas.

Choosing to study in Canada offers a blend of academic excellence, cultural diversity, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. It’s important for students to consider these factors carefully to ensure they make an informed decision that aligns with their educational aspirations and personal preferences.

My first-hand experience: Ipek Aydin

My name is Ipek Aydin, and I am a former international student, now working as a Recruitment Specialist at Huron University in London, Ontario, Canada.

When I was a grade 12 student in Istanbul, Turkey, I was considering many countries around the world for me to attend university. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to study or what I wanted to study. All I knew however, was that I wanted to have an excellent education, a diverse community, and valuable work experience during and after my undergrad.

When I started my research on universities, I first narrowed my choices down by program, then by the size of the institution, and finally by unique opportunities that are available for students. Once I had my criteria, it was easier to move forward. That is when I came across Huron University.

Huron University was founded in 1863 and is the founding institution of Western University. In addition to graduating with a degree from Western, Huron offers exclusive opportunities to its students on top of what Western University already offers. Huron’s average class size of 30 students makes the class atmosphere highly interactive — it’s a place where you get to know your professor and peers. Not only that, but Huron also guarantees every student a paid internship opportunity, which was very important for me as a former international student who didn’t have previous knowledge about working in Canada.

Huron really did help me with building my resumé/CV, completing mock interviews, and supporting me in every way possible. Its 161 years of excellence in education can’t be underestimated. I was, and continue to be, passionate about the education and opportunities that Huron provides to its students. So much so that upon graduating from Huron’s business program, I joined the university’s Recruitment Team, working full-time as a Recruitment Specialist. The experiences I had a student were incredibly impactful to me and I felt I needed to share with prospective students, like I once was.

If you are someone who wants to study in Canada, have an excellent education, explore unique opportunities, and join a tight-knit community that supports you from your very first day in Canada, throughout your studies, and even after graduation, Huron University might be the perfect fit for you.
