Embracing the Canadian Winter

Are you wondering how to navigate the Canadian winters? Figuring out what to pack, ways to keep warm and enjoy the winter season can be difficult if you've never experienced snow. At King's University College, in London, Ontario, we're experts in all things winter!

This article is intended to help you make those decisions and ensure you have a healthy and happy winter.

1. Research the temperature

For the city of London in Ontario, Canada you can see our weather stats from years prior online here. For other locations, a quick google search can easily bring up that information, or you can try the Government of Canada's historical weather data tool.

In London, Ontario, you can see that the cold months usually last between November and March, with temperatures ranging from 20° C to -18° C. The average temperature in London ranges between -3° C and 3° C for our winter season.

2. Learn how to dress for the weather

Now that you've figured out the average temperature for the Canadian city you'll be living in, the next step is to ensure you have the proper wardrobe to stay warm.

For temperatures between 5° C and 15° C, you'll want to dress in a light jacket. Layers are best! (Check out this article for tips on layering!)

For temperatures between -5° C and 5° C, you should dress in medium to warm clothes. Winter jacket, hat, mittens; again, layering is best.

For temperatures below -5°, bundle up! Make sure you're in full winter attire, meaning warm hat, mittens, scarf, sweater, warm pants, and boots.

3. Try some winter activities

Once you've acclimated to the cold weather, try some popular winter activities. Rent some skates and try ice skating at Victoria Park, go to the Christmas Market, go tubing — the list is endless! Here are some ideas in London, Ontario to get you started. Whichever town you choose is sure to have lots of winter activities to try.

4. Remember, it's only one season

Keep in mind that the cold comes and goes, so enjoy it while it's here! If it's not for you, no worries — spring is just around the corner! The best way to spend the winter season is surrounded by loved ones, so grab your roommate and your friends and make the most of the cold season.
