The job market is always changing, and a number of industries are experiencing rapid growth. You need an education that will equip you to step into the vacancies that employers are desperate to fill.
Durham College (DC) offers a number of programs that will give you the knowledge and skills you need to enter one of these in-demand professions.
1. Human Resources — Business
If you enjoy working with people and helping them solve their problems, you will never be short on job options. No matter the industry, the need for Human Resources (HR) remains constant.
HR professionals play an important role in maintaining the health, engagement, and productivity of a company’s employees by helping to create effective processes and a positive workplace culture. In this program, you’ll learn about conflict resolution, recruitment, training, and development and other important skills.
Start this program in May and you could graduate as early as fall 2024.
2. Mechanical Engineering Technician
With a background in engineering with the Mechanical Engineering Technician program, your knowledge will be sought after in a number of sectors, from energy generation to the automotive industry, and beyond.
DC offers students a number of choices as they explore an education in this field, including a four-semester program, or the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, which runs for six semesters and includes the opportunity for additional learning via a co-op option. Mechanical Engineering Technician — Non-Destructive Evaluation is a four-semester program that will teach you how to examine the infrastructure, components and structures that keep society running, and ensure they are operating safely. A fast-track, two semester version of this program is available for students with a degree in a related field.
3. Construction Management — Honours Bachelor
The population keeps growing each year, so it’s no surprise that Ontario’s construction sector continues to experience sustained and significant expansion. With the creation of an estimated 118,000 new jobs over the next 15 years, skilled workers will be in high demand for a long time to come. Those who can work in managerial roles like job site superintendents and project managers will be even more sought after.
Taking advantage of state-of-the-art facilities at both the Oshawa and Whitby campuses, the Construction Management — Honours Bachelor program will give you the practical knowledge of construction science you’ll need to excel, whether you’re working in the industrial, residential, institutional, or commercial construction industries. Lessons in business and leadership skills will give you the confidence to manage projects of all scopes and sizes.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work on real construction sites during two, 14-week field placements.
4. Critical Care Nursing
Critical care nurses play an indispensable role in caring for our society’s most vulnerable patients. In this role, you’ll monitor, assess, and treat the critically ill, while providing support to their families.
This two-semester Critical Care Nursing program is open to registered nurses (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Courses are offered online, with a critical care simulation component held at DC or a partner site and hands-on experience in a critical care unit.
Fourth-year students in the Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program can also apply.
5. Web Development
The internet is an indispensable part of modern life, and those with the skills and ability to keep up with the ever-changing digital landscape will always be coveted. Web Development is one of DC’s newest programs, and it will position you to take advantage of that demand.
To prepare for careers in web design and web development, students will work with the latest software and web technologies. You’ll produce interactive media projects on your own and with a group, build dynamic websites and mobile applications, and learn to address the ethical and professional issues that are unique to working online.
