The Co-op Advantage at the John Molson School of Business

A question that many students will consider at some point in their education is, “should I do co-op?” However, when most people think of co-op, they picture an undergraduate degree. But, did you know you can also take advantage of a co-op program in business school? At Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business, you could complete a full-time paid internship during your program. Check out your options for internships as a grad student at the John Molson School of Business (JMSB).

At Concordia, the phrase “co-op” and “internships” are used interchangeably. But, if you’re not sure what a co-op/internship would actually look like, here’s what you can expect at JMSB:

  • A paid, full-time position (minimum 35 hours each week) that is relevant to your program of study
  • You’ll start your internship in either September, January, or May
  • Your internship will last between 12 to 17 weeks

Programs available for co-op

Not all programs in the JMSB are eligible for the co-op program. So, if this type of experience is important to you, make sure you check that the program you want has the option for co-op. If you’re in the following programs, you have the opportunity to add an internship to your education:

While these programs are eligible for co-op placements, you must apply for grad co-op through the Institute for Co-Operative Education separately and meet the requirements. Keep in mind that applying for grad co-op is a competitive process, and meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee acceptance into the grad co-op program.

The MBA co-op special feature: CEO shadowing

The MBA co-op education program allows you to participate in paid internships in Canada, the US, or abroad, for one semester. That already is a great opportunity, but the MBA program takes it one step further and offers an extra special feature of co-op that you can take advantage of — CEO shadowing.

Unique to the JMSB, CEO shadowing is the opportunity to follow around and learn from a top executive! With this feature, you’ll have a paid internship for up to 15 weeks where you’ll work alongside the CEO of a small or medium-sized company. This special feature is open to both full-time and part-time MBA students!

Benefits of co-op

So, now that you know what internship opportunities are available for a student in the JMSB, discover the top four benefits to participating in the graduate co-op program:

  • Gain real-world experience as you complete your academic studies without adding time to your degree length
  • Build your professional network through your internship, specialized workshops, and networking events
  • Earn academic recognition on your transcript for completing work experience in your field of study
  • Acquire valuable experience in the Canadian labour market
