Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, has been offering high-level English language classes for over 50 years! Their full-time program, Language Education for Academic Purposes (LEAP), helps prepare students for both academic and professional success in Canada. LEAP offers immersive learning, small class sizes, experienced instructors, and a supportive campus community.

What is LEAP?

The LEAP program at MRU is taught by Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certified instructors. It is accredited by Languages Canada and focuses on the important aspects of English proficiency for academic and professional success. This includes reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills.

LEAP is split into four different levels ranging from low intermediate to advanced. Your starting point is determined by a proficiency placement test to make sure you start at the appropriate level for your skills. To be successful in LEAP, it is recommended to have a CLB level of 4 or an IELTS score of 4.

How LEAP works

The time it takes to complete LEAP depends on your starting level. If you start at LEAP 1, it will take 15 months (four 13-week terms) to complete. The program’s structured timeline allows for focused and progressive learning. LEAP's university-style delivery model with multiple instructors also ensures a smooth transition into credit programs.

Once you have completed LEAP 4, the highest level, you will meet MRU’s English language proficiency requirements. This means you are eligible to apply for degree, diploma, and certificate programs at MRU.

LEAP-to-credit option

A big benefit of MRU’s English language program is the LEAP-to-credit option. If you’re qualified for admission to certain MRU programs but are missing the English language proficiency, you can apply for dual admission to LEAP and that program at the same time. Once you finish LEAP 4, you can start your program in the next available term. MRU programs eligible for LEAP-to-credit include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Massage Therapy Diploma, and Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma.

Personalized learning in small classes

The average LEAP class has only 20 students. These small classes help you easily connect with your teachers and classmates. You will have lots of opportunities to practice English, join discussions and take part in interactive activities that will help build your fluency and confidence.

Life at Mount Royal University

MRU offers a safe and welcoming campus. As a LEAP student, you’ll have full access to campus services, including Recreation and Wellness Services. You can also visit the International Student Support Centre which is a dedicated space for getting help with immigration information, studying, socializing, and participating in cultural activities.
