Applying to York U: An International Student Guide

Applying to university as an international student can be an exciting but overwhelming process. We're here to help! We've put together a guide to help you through each phase of York University's application process:

1. Admission requirements

Now that you have taken the first few steps towards your university journey, it's time to narrow down your programs of interest and review their specific admission requirements. Be sure that you have completed or plan to meet these requirements before submitting your application.

2. English proficiency tests: IELTS & TOEFL

Make sure that you demonstrate language proficiency in your program's language of instruction to gain admission to York. York accepts submissions from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) for international applications. You may be exempt from submitting a TOEFL or IELTS result based on your academic background, so we recommend you check the requirements for specific programs and possible exemptions.

3. Application process

If you meet all the requirements, apply to York University! Keep an eye out for the application deadlines. It is best if you mark them out on a calendar. After you have confirmed that your program is accepting applications, you can apply directly through York University or the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). Your OUAC application will be sent directly to York University.

4. After submitting your application

Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email confirming your application and containing your York Reference Number. This generally takes five to seven business days, so don't worry if you haven't received one right away!

5. Get your documents together

While you are waiting for your email confirmation, it is a good time to get all of your documents ready so that you are prepared for the next steps. You'll need to get transcripts from your high school(s) or any other educational institutions previously attended. If you have multiple transcripts, combine them into one PDF; this will make the process much easier when you upload your documents to your MyFile account. You will receive information on how to access your York University MyFile account in your application confirmation email. Unless requested, you should not submit any documents by mail.

Once documents have been submitted, you can then track the progress of your application online through your MyFile account. Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that York University receives all the required supporting documentation in a timely manner. The application processing period takes approximately six to eight weeks and it begins after all the supporting documents have been received by the Admissions Office.
