Description:Exclusively for learners who speak English as an additional language, this program offers five levels of instruction, from Foundations to English for Academic Purposes (EAP). When you complete the EAP level, you will receive a General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate and may apply to other Sheridan programs without further language testing.

The ESL program encourages classroom interaction. You will work on group projects and assignments that require interaction with your peers and in the community. You will practice speaking, listening, reading, pronunciation and writing in a classroom and in labs. You will also learn to do presentations, research topics, take notes and write texts in English.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Or at least 19 years old by the first day of classes.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      You will be placed in your ESL level based on your English Language Placement Test results from one of the following options:

      • The iTEP Placement Plus Test

      OR

      • Your valid IELTS (Academic), TOEFL (iBT) or Duolingo score. (You will be placed in an ESL level based on your lowest individual skills score. Tests are valid for two years from the test date to the start of class.)
