Description:The Gastrointestinal Sciences, Immunology, and Microbiology and Infectious Diseases graduate programs have recently merged under one program director. Each program offers a unique research opportunity in a wide range of research interests including Physiology, Immunology, Immunopharmacology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Parasitology, Pathology, Epidemiology, and others. These Graduate Programs provide state-of-the-art training opportunities with researchers from both basic science and clinical disciplines.

Through coursework, regular seminars, and journal clubs, our students are able to study a specific research area in depth while gaining a broad understanding of their discipline. Our three specializations are part of a variety of research groups and students are able to take advantage of interdisciplinary training opportunities, professional development activities, and attend conferences both within Canada and around the world.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    MSc degree, or relevant master’s degree, recognized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, or transfer from MSc program, or, in exceptional cases, BSc degree or equivalent.
    A minimum admission grade point average of 3.30 (on the University of Calgary four-point system; equivalent to a "B+") based on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units (10 full-course equivalents) and any master’s course work if applicable.

    In addition, admission into the Gastrointestinal Sciences Graduate Program requires sponsorship of the applicant by a Research Supervisor (including a guarantee from the Supervisor of financial support for the applicant).
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7.5] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 105] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 86]
    Application Notes : The documents that potential students are required to submit in order to be considered for admission are:

    * Two copies of all official transcripts of grades and 2 copies of degree certificates (if applicable) - these must be sent directly from the issuing institution in a sealed and stamped envelope, and mailed to the Gastrointestinal Sciences Graduate Program.
    * Your current CV
    * Three references from individuals that can attest to your academic experience
    * English Language Proficiency (if applicable)- TOEFL/IELTS test scores (Please note: the minimum TOEFL score requirement is 600 on the paper - based test, 250 on the computer - based test or 100 on the Internet - based test). Scores form the Graduate Record Examination may be submitted as well.
