Program Information

School:Dalhousie Medical School
Faculty:Faculty of Medicine
Degree:Not Applicable
Field of Study:Medicine (MD)
Description:The residency program director for Dermatology is Dr. Scott Murray. The program was reviewed by the Royal College in 2000. They felt the overall program was excellent. However, a concern of the evaluators was the high clinical volume which could potentially compromise the teaching program. On receipt of this input, steps have been taken to manage clinic activity while ensuring many educational opportunities are available.

The Dermatology residency training program at Dalhousie University will not participate in the CARMS match but may also have positions idenitified for funded residents. (This may vary from year to year.) Applicants require PGY1 and PGY2 either in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics. Occasionally other combinations are accepted if they meet with the Royal College's approval. During these years, students are exposed to all the difficult dermatology cases in the Maritimes as it is the tertiary/quaternary care hospital. In addition to these patients, there are those seen in previously identified clinics. There are special sessions in pathology with a dermatopathologist, Dr. Noreen Walsh, regular journal clubs and basic science sessions once a month. Students are encouraged to present cases at the Canadian Dermatology Association meeting once a year and they are expected to write at least one research paper during the three years.
