Description:The Don Wright Faculty of Music is the first in Canada to offer a one-year (12-month/three term) MA in Music Theory or Musicology. Our redesigned MA degree programs in both Music Theory and Musicology will continue to provide high-quality courses in a shortened time frame.

This exciting redesign offers students a combination of course-based and project-based learning in a more compact, intensive experience. Each year available courses will reflect the strengths and diverse research interests of our music theory and musicology faculty.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Admission to our Master’s programs requires a four-year honours degree with a major in music or its equivalent from an accredited university. A minimum of a 70% average must have been achieved in undergraduate studies, with normally at least an 80% average in the proposed area of concentration. Note that meeting these minimum requirements is not a guarantee of admission.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      The application is online and administered by Western's School for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Note that applicants will be required to upload supplementary documents (see full list of admission requirements by program) to the online application.

      MA in Musicology
      ▪ A Bachelor of Music with specialization in Music History, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Music, or equivalent
      ▪ Two recent essays (3,000-5,000 words) that demonstrate writing skills and knowledge of bibliographical and research techniques
      ▪ A one-page statement of background, goals, and research interests in musicology
      ▪ Two confidential letters of reference
