Description:Program focuses on the theory and practice of communication and culture. Offered through a partnership between York and Ryerson, the program capitalizes on the facilities and resources shared by both universities. Unique in Ontario, this program combines academic and professional work. You’ll have the opportunity to examine the social, political, and economic dimensions of such issues as globalization, deregulation, privacy and security, convergence of communication industries, cross-cultural communications and new media. Areas of research strength include: communication and cultural theory; cultural policy and law; cultural and media history; telecommunications policy and strategy; political economy of media; critical analysis of technology; and globalization. Benefit from the real-world experience of professors from both universities in the fields of communications, the social sciences, humanities, media and fine arts.

Admission to the PhD program requires demonstrated capacity to undertake advanced study in communication and culture, normally through completion of the MA in communication and/or cultural studies or in a related academic or professional field [or equivalent], with a high level of accomplishment [normally a minimum of "B+" average or equivalent].
