Description | Dalhousie's Department of Oceanography is Canada's premier location for oceanographic research and education. Their researchers study every aspect of the world's oceans, from the velocity of the waves to the salinity of the water, the biology of the deep sea to the mud of the ocean floor. Their research has real-world results: from moving shipping lanes in the Bay of Fundy to protect endangered right whales, to collecting valuable data from the ocean that helps us to better understand climate change and predict the weather.
The department's facilities include a large running seawater system with environmentally controlled rooms, high-pressure facilities for simulation of deep sea conditions, and large tanks for fish studies. Seagoing facilities are supplied by federal oceanographic ships. The department is equipped with the collecting gear, laboratory instrumentation and computers required for oceanographic research. Library facilities are centralized in a science library nearby.
