Prerequisites Notes | Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level. Preference will be given to applicants with academic grade 12 English. The applicant must provide two references from recent employers. A "Level II" Police Records Check including a Vulnerable Persons Check is required; these checks must be current (at least within six months) to program start. At the time of admission and throughout the program, the student's police record must remain free of criminal convictions related to the program. The applicant is advised that incidents in areas such as these may prevent them from graduating. A police record may also affect employment opportunities after program completion. The applicant must also provide written verification of 40 volunteer or paid hours, preferably within the last five years, in a Long Term Care, Mental Health or suitable facility that addresses special client care needs. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant paid or volunteer work experience.
Following acceptance and prior to October 1, the applicant must provide the Admissions Office with: a Holland College medical form completed by a physician indicating fitness of the applicant; evidence of screening for Tuberculosis from Public Health or Physician; a Police Records Check Level II/Vulnerable Persons Check; Current CPR - Basic rescuer Level C, and a Standard First Aid certificate from a recognized First Aid/CPR Trainer. Hepatitis B and influenza Immunization recommended. Applicants should also include a résumé including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program. The program and occupational field require students to lift, move and transfer clients. Students are also required to conduct frequent handwashing, use soaps/lotions for bathing clients and be exposed to cleaning and sanitizing chemicals. Students who suffer from food allergies should also be aware that they are required to assist in feeding clients and are therefore exposed to a wide variety of foods. Finally, students will require access to transportation during their training, in particular during their on-the-job training. | | |

Description | In the Resident Care Worker program you will build a strong foundation in adult health care to prepare you to work in long-term care (nursing homes), acute care (hospitals), mental health facilities and community agencies. You will study effective methods of communication, how to use gentle persuasion, and how to work with dementia patients and mental health patients. Clinical practicums will ensure that you are prepared to meet clients’ personal and physical needs. | | |
