Description | Dalhousie University offers a Royal College accredited training program in Nuclear Medicine. Trainees rotate through several institutions including the two sites of the QE-II Health Sciences Centre and the Izaak Walton Killam/Grace Maternity Hospitals. These hospitals serve as the tertiary care centres for both adult and pediatric medicine for Nova Scotia and to a large extent the Maritime Provinces. There is a wide range of clinical material. The clinical faculty include five nuclear medicine physicians at the QE-II and two practitioners at the IWK/Grace Hospital. The nuclear medicine division has the services of a dedicated radiopharmacist and medical physicist.
Most candidates enter as a combined resident in radiology and nuclear medicine, although this is not mandatory. The program accepts one resident every other year. The training usually includes an initial 18 months in diagnostic radiology followed by one year in nuclear medicine, then another 18 months of radiology. The resident then sits the Royal College of Radiology examination. The final year is in nuclear medicine which concludes with the Royal College Nuclear Medicine examination. | | |
