Prerequisites NotesAdmission Requirements: ▪ Successful completion of a Master’s degree. ▪ Minimum GPA of 78% or B+ from all graduate grades. Eligibility for funding in the form of teaching assistantships and internal scholarships requires a minimum of 78% for domestic students (Canadian or Permanent Residents) and 80% for international students. With few exceptions, only those students eligible for funding are admitted. Similarly, exceptionally strong Masters students may be considered for promotion (upgrading) to the PhD program without completing the Masters degree. Environment and Sustainability and Migration and Ethnic Relations students apply for graduate admission to Geography and subsequently apply to the Collaborate Programs early in their first term of the program.

DescriptionThe PhD is a research degree in which the thesis, contributing original knowledge to the field of research, is the primary focus. Graduates go on to academic careers or to other occupations in which doctoral-level education is an asset or prerequisite. Courses are chosen to ensure that students have the background required to undertake the thesis research. Students are educated in geographical research through courses and especially through direct individual supervision.

Our graduate programs provide a blend of formal instruction, seminar discussions, personal supervision, a wide array of field experiences in many regions of the world, and the opportunity to practice and improve communication, teaching and research skills. Graduates go on to academic careers, teaching professions or government and industry careers. The PhD is a research degree in which the dissertation, a contribution of original knowledge to Geography is the primary focus.
