DescriptionLinguistics is about using tools to analyze language function, but also exploring the historical and social variations in language.

Words are powerful and complex. From phonetics and phonology to syntax and semantics. If you don’t know these yet, you’ll be an expert when you graduate.

Understanding every aspect of language is helpful for almost every profession. You might gravitate towards teaching, translation, and speech pathology. But technology is creating a new need for experts in linguistics. Think artificial intelligence and language/voice recognition programs. Linguistics will always be in-demand.

You can complete this program as a Bachelor or an Honours Bachelor degree. Registration in the honours degree usually begins in the second year, but admission may be gained in the third or fourth year provided you meet requirements.

Interested in challenging yourself? Wondering how you might add an interdisciplinary approach to your degree? You might be interested in SASAH! The School of Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities is the flagship Program of Western’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Unique in Canada, the SASAH Program offers an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and community-engaged educational experience. When you graduate, you receive an undergraduate Major from the School in conjunction with a Major from an existing program, such as Linguistics. Learn more here.
