The English Language Studies (ELS) program offers high quality English language programming to international students from around the world who wish to improve their academic English language proficiency and fluency. Graduates from the ELS program will have met the English language proficiency requirements for entry into UNBC undergraduate and graduate programs as well as other post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, Canada.

UNBC is unique in recognizing the value of ELS students’ achievements and is proud to award students, who successfully complete the ELS program, up to 15 university transfer credits once they begin their undergraduate or graduate studies at UNBC.

Apartment style suites are located steps from the main campus. Housing is a first come, first served basis. Housing services also provides an academic intensive floor, which emphasizes quiet study. Housing fees include a landline (please bring your own phone!), and wireless high speed internet. Students are responsible for providing their own cooking and eating utensils, food, dishes, and glassware. Students must also provide their own bedding. Students new to residence and students whom have completed less than 30 UNBC credit hours will also be placed on the meal plan. UNBC's Residence 7-Day Meal Plan provides patrons with unlimited access to the Dining Hall and all of its Food Service Options. To enhance your experience, the dining hall will feature extended operating hours from 6am to 11pm, new food stations, improved seating, and weekly events. This plan is a value-loaded meal option that allows students, staff and faculty unlimited access to a variety of healthy and nutritious food options as they need it. The meal plan is an additional fee at $2166 per semester

UNBC offers extensive student services and programs to ease the transition for incoming students including orientation programs (social and academic), quality of life events, personal, educational, career, and special needs counselling, and learning skills centre (learning strategies, writing skills, and tutoring).

University life can present challenges, but we're here to help! We have a Student Career Centre that can help you find employment, and opportunities. Some of our services include offering workshops to assist students in preparing for employment, arranging employer recruiting and information sessions fo students, participating in annual career fairs hosted on campus, posting career opportunities for Alumni, posting part-time and full-time jobs for students and organizing co-operative education work term placements. We also have peer helpers who are available in the Career Centre during various times during the week to help you find what you need.

UNBC is home to the Timber-wolves men’s and ladies varsity basketball teams that play in the CIS and Canada West. Several International students have joined our teams and benefit from tuition waivers intended to help them with the cost of their studies. There are currently more than 40 clubs governed by the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS). Over 80% of students at UNBC participate in clubs or in club activities. The University is now wireless allowing student connection to the Internet from anywhere on campus. All residence rooms are wired for computer connections and have access to the Internet. The cost of high speed Internet is included in the housing fees.

The International Centre at UNBC plans and promotes cultural awareness on campus through a variety of activities at www.unbc.ca/international-education.
