Description:The University of Windsor MSW program is geared toward students seeking advanced professional knowledge and skills within an ecological systems perspective. There is an emphasis on the ‘interrelationship’ across levels of practice, including the interrelationship between individuals and their environments and the impact the environment has on individuals. Environment includes a range of contexts including but not limited to family context, organizational infrastructures, service systems, network linkages, political forces, cultural forces, social forces, social work values, roles, and professional issues.

There are four options for the MSW program:


1) Advanced Standing MSW - Applicants who, at the time of registration, hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Social Work program accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) or the Council on Social Work Education are eligible for the Advanced Standing option. This is a 1-year full-time option that starts in May.

2) Regular Track MSW - Applicants who, at the time of registration, hold an honours degree in a related discipline from an accredited undergraduate program are eligible for the Regular Track option. This is a 20-month full-time option that starts in September.

3) Advanced Standing MSW For Working Professionals - Applicants who, at the time of registration, have at least three years of social service work experience and hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a Social Work program accredited by the Canadian Association of Social Work Education or the Council on Social Work Education are eligible for the Advanced Standing option. This is a 16-month weekend only option that starts in September and January.

4) Regular Track MSW For Working Professionals - Applicants who, at the time of registration, have at least three years of social service work experience and hold a four-year related undergraduate degree from an accredited undergraduate program are eligible for the Regular Track MSW for Working Professionals option. This is a 32-month weekend only option that starts in September.

Admission Requirements

Test Scores:
  • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 250] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100]
Application Notes : GRE or MAT is recommended for graduates of universities outside of Canada and the USA, and for any applicants with a grade point average below the required 73%. All applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English to be considered for admission.

Applicants also must have relevant work, volunteer, or practical experience; excellent reference letters; a strong personal statement; and evidence of successful completion of one undergraduate course in statistics and one in research methods both of which must be related to social sciences. The coordinator of the program can provide applicants with options for accomplishing these requirements.
