Edmonton Public Schools (EPS) is a large urban school jurisdiction located in Edmonton, the capital city of the province of Alberta, Canada. EPS's International Student Program provides opportunities for motivated students from other countries to study challenging academic subjects with their Canadian peers and also receive intensive English language training. In addition to the fully accredited Alberta curriculum, an Advanced Placement Program (AP) is available for highly capable international students.
All academic programs and courses are of a high standard and EPS has an excellent reputation for effectively preparing high school students for the rigours of university or college. International students are fully integrated with their Canadian student peers and, depending on their levels of English, students may choose to attend one of the 14 high schools within EPS.
Students are academically prepared for a wide range of post-secondary study opportunities and in particular, university entrance. Courses include English, mathematics, social studies, and sciences. To enrich their academic lives, students also take additional courses in computer technology, physical education and fine arts, and participate in many extracurricular school-based clubs and activities where they will develop the important skills of leadership and citizenship.
Edmonton Public Schools has outstanding athletics programs including football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, downhill and cross-country skiing, swimming, and ice skating. All schools have sports teams.
Many diverse clubs are available in our schools to address student interests. Journalism, chess, student leadership, cross-country running, badminton, creative writing, and photography are only a few examples.
EPS uses advanced facilities to assist students with their education. Academic resources include computer-assisted instruction, libraries, scientific laboratories, television studios, and technology centres.
Edmonton, a beautiful city of over a million people, is noted for its abundant parkland and the natural beauty of its river valley. International students are able to experience festivals of arts, dance and theatre performances, professional hockey and football games, excellent dining, and numerous shopping opportunities. With its cosmopolitan reputation, Edmonton also offers opportunities for cultural, business, and recreational partnerships on an international level. The Rocky Mountains are a few hours away and are noted for skiing, snowboarding, and sightseeing opportunities.
EPS officials, students, faculty, and staff assist international students in coping and adapting to their new environment in the least stressful manner possible. Teachers and student advisors are available to counsel students on issues concerning finances, school, and personal well being. Multilingual staff are available to provide translation services. Many schools within the district have formed international clubs that address the unique cultural circumstances of international students. With the help of our staff, students can arrange celebrations and social gatherings with other international students in order to ease the stress of being alone in Canada.
Edmonton Public Schools is closely affiliated with the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan University, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) and The Canadian Association of Public Schools — International (CAPS-I).
