English for University Purposes (EUP)
Acadia also offers English language studies programs, one of which is English for University Purposes (EUP) studies. Acadia's EUP program is for students who have been accepted by Acadia into a degree program, but do not have the required TOEFL score. This class prepares you for the high level of English you will need for your degree program at Acadia. Students receive 25 hours a week of English instruction. EUP instructors will teach you the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills you will need for the academic classroom. Acadia University’s Open Acadia division strives to make learning accessible to everyone. The distance learning program offers over 80 self paced, start any time distance education courses in the arts, sciences, and professional studies. Students have the option of taking most courses through either print based correspondence or online. Acadia’s distance learning courses are of the highest calibre and are taught by current or retired faculty and professionals with expertise in the area of study. All first year students are guaranteed a room in residence as long as they apply and pay their residence deposit. Eleven residences house over 1,500 students in modern and well appointed facilities. All residence rooms include local telephone service and voice mail, wireless internet and wired network connections.
Most off-campus housing is fairly close to campus. Bachelor apartments range from $350.00 to $475.00 per month, one-bedroom apartments range from $325.00 to $500.00 per month, two-bedroom apartments range from $300.00 to $600.00 per month, and prices vary among larger units. Acadia holds many helpful activities for students such as welcome week, orientation activities, international student orientation, graduate student orientation, and mature student orientation.
There are eleven varsity athletic teams, six club sports, and nine intramural sports. Acadia's athletic complex sports two gymnasiums, a six-lane swimming pool, an Olympic-sized ice surface, squash and racquetball courts, weight and cardio room, indoor and outdoor tracks, tennis courts, and large outdoor sports fields.
The Acadia Students' Union (ASU) holds activities and events throughout the year. It also runs the Axe Lounge, where students can go for cocktails, see live bands, and have a great time at theme nights.
There are over 60 student led clubs on campus including Acadia Philosophy Society, Acadia Amnesty International, Acadia Economics Society, Acadia Fencing Club, Nutrition and Dietetics, Juggling Club, Acadia Young Liberals, Acadia Lacrosse Club, and Acadia Equestrian Team. Acadia is the home of a 100-seat theatre dedicated to drama productions, two large general purpose theatres, and the 2,000-seat War Memorial Gymnasium, which provides a large venue for live entertainment. The Students' Union Building has various sized venues. The University community benefits from numerous presentations during the year, comprising the Acadia Performing Arts Series, concerts by students and faculty of the University's School of Music, and student theatre productions.
Acadia University welcomes students with special needs and will accommodate individual requests for support services, insofar as these are available and can be provided. Assistance ranges from adapted residence rooms, to special parking, counselling, and provision of student assistants. Adapted study space is available in the Vaughan Memorial Library. Acadia has approximately 10 active exchange programs for undergraduates. International students on campus represent over 60 countries and an international student advisor provides guidance and assistance to the international students. The Wong International Centre serves as a resource centre and meeting place for international and Canadian students.
