Areas of Expertise

Algoma University places a great deal of emphasis on personal interaction between students and faculty members through small classes and frequent use of seminars, labs, and tutorials. Algoma U ensures personal attention by offering one of the lowest student/faculty ratios among Ontario universities.

With no class bigger than 75 students, our students excel in our ideal learning environment. Students can study in this environment in courses including Biology, Business Administration, Community Economic and Social Development, Computer Science, English, Environmental Science, Engineering (1st Year), Geography, History, Law and Justice, Music, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Visual Arts and many more!

The Algoma Dormitory is a large, clean, secure 96-bed student residence. Algoma Dormitory provides a comfortable, safe, and convenient on-campus residence for first-year, direct from high school students. Algoma Dormitory includes:

Spirit Village Dormitory

The Spirit Village Dormitory provides a comfortable, safe, and convenient on-campus residence for Canadian and international students. The Spirit Village Dormitory is a large, clean, secure 45-bed student residence. Students can enjoy access to a shared kitchen space, allowing them to prepare their own meals. Many of our international students live here, allowing you the chance to embrace diversity and maybe take your taste buds on a cultural adventure! The Spirit Village Dormitory includes:

Spirit Village Townhouses

The Spirit Village Townhouses provide convenient and affordable on-campus housing for Algoma University students. Each unit contains five private bedrooms, two bathrooms, a common living room, and a kitchen. The townhouses include:

Incoming Students

The Student Success Team is your first stop for access to support services needed to strengthen your academic environment. From academic advising and planning to accessing counselling services or post-graduate advising, this team is equipped to enhance your student success from first year to convocation.

Career Planning

The Co-op and Careers Services Office offers help with resume and cover letter writing. The office also offers updated employment postings, Internet access to labour market information, a career skills library, and staff resources. Information is also available regarding aptitude testing and overseas employment.

Sports

The George Leach Centre is a fully equipped fitness and recreation facility. The Centre includes court surfaces accommodating badminton, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Also available are aerobics rooms, weight training equipment, outdoor tennis courts, and on site massage therapy. Instructional programs available include aerobics, dance, self defense, tennis, golf, and first aid.

Activities

As a student at Algoma U, you can run for student government in the Algoma University Students' Union (AUSU) and/or the Shingwauk Aboriginal Students' Association (SASA). You can relax at night in the student centre, The Speakeasy, where you can listen to a band, sing your heart out in karaoke, or dance the night away at a themed pub night. If the pub isn't your scene, don't worry. There's plenty of student clubs with a wide variety of interests; everything from gaming, social activism, gardening, and photography. And if you can't find something that interests you, you can always start your own club! Plus, there's varsity athletics and intramural sports. Literally, there's something for everyone!

Information Technology

Computing equipment throughout the campus, including the library cataloguing/circulation system, is integrated into a local area network. The network links over 100 micro computer workstations located in student labs, faculty and staff offices, residence rooms, and the library. The aim of this network is to provide students, faculty, and staff with universal access to information systems, e-mail, internet and web access, and sophisticated computing resources. All students, staff members, and faculty are issued a personal e-mail account.

Cultural

Cultural groups include the International Film Society, Algoma Conservatory of Music, and Theatre Algoma. These groups are open to students and also organize events throughout the year.

Special Services

All students at Algoma University have access to The Learning Centre and the Disability Services Office, the hub for academic and disability support services on campus. The Learning Centre and the Disability Services Office staff are committed to helping students reach their academic potential, ensuring student success, and helping students address and overcome the challenges faced during their post-secondary education. Once students come to us for help, we will stop at nothing to make their experience at Algoma University as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

International Involvement

Algoma University offers more than just a unique classroom experience. For students interested in taking their classroom experience to exotic destinations and foreign countries, they can take part in a variety of study abroad opportunities. Algoma U is committed to providing students with a cross-cultural learning experience, whether on campus, or somewhere else in the world. We have partnerships with over 30 universities in the following countries: Australia, Austria, China, Colombia, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and Sweden.
